It looks like I will end up with the red 91 XJ as my new wheeler. I am going to open this build up to everyones opinion. I will title this thing and street drive it as well as wheel it.
This is what I am thinking. 1. Move both axles from MJ to XJ. They are already regeared to 4.10. Rearend is welded front has a crap locker. Prolly put detroit in front. 2. Lift? Should I go with the 6" coils I already have or drop down to 4" to give it better street manners? 3. I am thinking of cutting out the rusty rockers and welding in sliders. 4. I will be doing an SYE. 5. Looking @ either AJ's bumpers or JCR offroad's bumpers. 6.Thinking of running either 34x11.5 or 33x12.5. Going to try to reuse the Bart Wheels on MJ. If there not too screwed up. 7. Also looking at internal sport cage/ rollbar. 8. going to cut fenders. Should I put aftermarket flares back on of go flareless?
Please give your ideas. And Don't be a smart ASS.. Mongo, Wally, Ed.....

1. Are you sure they are regeared? I am pretty certain they are still 3.54/3.55 2. I am thinking 4" and trimming with bumpstops (maybe look in to an air or nitrogen charged bumpstop) droop and low c.o.g. vs. uptravel and overall flex. 3. Cut out rockers and maybe look into boat-sides (plate from bottom of sub-frame to rocker). 4. Go with true sye with HD 32 spline output shaft, don't mess with hack-n-tap. 5. AJ, or make your own, Warner sells cut-offs cheap. 6. 34s or maybe 35s, but go with something good, tires can make or break you. 7. Internal cages are really cool but they do crowd you, exo's give you more interior room and can be done tastefully but they are never really very pretty. 8. If you are going with your Barts and bigger tires and still street drive you are going to want some sort of flares or mudflaps, my suggestion would be look into a tube-flare. But then again Bushwackers always look good.
Just my $.o2

1. I would put as little as a lift as possible. 2. trim out and make some tube flairs like Vlad said. They are a hell of a lot stronger, and if you don't get enough trimmed, or cant trim any more, the tube will save your tires from getting cut up, and smashing a good set of flairs. I have plans for some that I designed for a xj somewhere. 3. Sye if needed if you get no vibs when lifted, I wouldn't worry about it. 4. Tires: If you plan to street drive this on a regular basis, get something that will wear good. that means NO Swampers!!! OR Get a good set of AT's for the street, And keep a "wheeling" set of tires just for that. 5. Bumpers: Make your own!!! 6. Cage. I have seen a xj with half exo, and half internal. and it was sweet. Ill dig up the pics of it. 7.Do the rocker thing that is a great idea...But Boatside would look kick ass!!!

Thats a JCR or an AJ's cage I believe... saw it on one of their sites... SYE can't hurt anything, I would do it over 3" for good measure, and a good driveshaft too. The welded rear will end up breaking on the street, not IF but WHEN... might think about a locker there too. Maybe an Aussie in front. Either way, will suck in the snow. 4" with 34s would be OK with major trimming, I think it would still be tight fit. I will think about it some more today.

it is a JCR. but he can come up with his own design. I just put it up to show it can be done tastefully

Take a look at This guys build. I want to do the rockers just like his. I will also be cutting the rear quarters out. Due to the fact they are mostly rusted away anyway. The tube fenders on this thing are badass but it looks like a very time consuming process. www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=922035

OMG that front end is hideous. but I like the rest of it. That does seem very time consuming.

first thing I would is crawl underneath it and see how rust it really is. You know how bad some of my floor was, and my rockers/ wheel wells were 100% solid. Would suck to go to all the trouble of tearing it apart if the frame is really rust, or your going to replace all of the floors. Might as well start with something a bit more decent if you are going to do something other than just beat it up, and throw it away.

I crawled under it tonight. It is pretty much rust free as far as the floor pans go. However the rocker on the drivers side is rusted and the rear quarter on the passengers side is rusted. So I am going to cut both rear corners out at the first body line and weld a peice of 2x6 quarter wall in there to do away with rust as well as add rear corner protection. I will be also be cutting out both rockers out and welding in more 2x6 quarter wall in there. I am toying around with boat siding from the rockers down to the frame/ belly up skid plate.
I also pulled off both right side fender flares just for the hell of it tonite. I will be cutting the front fenders on the old flare lines and notching the rear and folding them under.
Just my thoughts for tonite.
